This study presents a history of research on the genre of the canonical gospels, partly focusing on the development of the genre of "biography" in classical studies. While New Testament scholars for many decades insisted that the Gospels were not biographies and thus "knew" what ancient biography was, classical scholars struggled with how to define ancient biography.
Although most modern New Testament and classical scholars do not deny that the Gospels are biographies, this study shows that the implications of such claims have too often been overlooked, especially by scholars who study the historical Jesus.
