Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a powder metallurgy method offering many advantages such as fast consolidation of metallic materials, high variability or possibility of near net shape processing. However, only small-shaped samples are commonly prepared.

In this work, a rod 15 mm in diameter and nearly 80 mm long was prepared using an innovative SPS die design from Ti15Mo alloy. Process parameters were optimized and thanks to the innovative design, the rod could be forged in order to get rid of remaining porosity and to refine the microstructure. Microstructure was studied and mechanical properties were measured for both as-sintered and sintered + forged conditions as well as for Ti15Mo alloy prepared by conventional casting. While as-sintered rod referred after solution treatment 20 % elongation and yield strength 600 MPa, forging improved the elongation to 33 % preserving the yield strength which is comparable to conventionally cast Ti15Mo alloy.
