This paper asks how justified was the criticism of banks in the early 20th century for having high staff costs. It introduces the basic trends of so-called "calculation" in banks and presents a basic source base for research on clerical salaries.
It interprets these sources based on the employee policy of the banks and the pricing relationships of the time.
