Nuclear-Spin-Changing Collisions Between H3+ and H2 in an Ion Trap Experiment

Abstract

We present the design and first results of an ion trap experiment for researching nuclear-spin-changing collisions between H3+and H2. The experiment uses action spectroscopy to observe the rotational population of the trapped H3+ions and to measure the rate coefficients of the nuclear-spin-changing processes.

The design of the experiment is guided by a state-to-state kinetic model of the trapped ions.
