The New Testament in the translation of the Slovak poet Karol Stromen in exil

Abstract

The paper is focused on the unknown translation of the New Testament by the Slovak poet Karol Strmen in exile in Pennsylvania, USA. As Czechoslovakia was under communist rule at the time and new Bible translations were later created, this translation has never been reflected in Slovakia.

In the translation process, the author aimed for realistic, understandable language and a divergence from the literal translation of Latin (and Greek) constructions. The rhythmization of some passages, the attempt at a vivid translation of dialogized passages, and the presence of poetic expressions are noticeable in the text.
