Surface modifications that reduce non-specific interactions with biomolecules (fouling) are crucial in various applications involving crude biofluids, such as biosensing, bioanalysis, and medical contexts. Zwitterionic polymer brushes (PBs) not only resist fouling but also offer the potential for additional surface functionalization.

We have recently developed an ultra-low fouling zwitterionic terpolymer brush tailored specifically for biosensing applications while also being adaptable for diverse uses. In this work, we present quantitative and qualitative comparison of fouling behavior in blood plasma on different low fouling PBs, including the terpolymer brush.

Our findings can potentially contribute to advancing the design of PBs with improved low fouling properties.
