Natural terminology in Jungmann's Czech-German Dictionary

Abstract

The paper focuses on Josef Jungmann's collaboration with Jan Svatopluk Presl. It deals with the entries reflecting natural science terminology and the sources from which the dictionary drew.

In the case of natural science terminology, these are first of all the Ssavectvo or manuscript systematic for his own edification and Baron Jiří Cuvier's Discourse on the upheavals of the earth's crust and the changes in animal life caused by them. Besides the geological names and names denoting parts of animal bodies, the paleozoological terminology is certainly worthy of attention.

This was created as part of Presle's translation of Cuvier's writings, which does not translate the international names of prehistoric animals into French. Presl does not use calque-form adoptions as the dominant naming usus but works with a motivation based on the available archaeological evidence.
