Abstract
One of the few closely documented cases of a female participant in the early settlement of the Caribbean islands (Espanola and Cuba) and the conquest of Mexico at the very beginning of the 16th century. Her fate is traceable both through her two marriages to the so-called first conquistadors, but mainly through her own activism in the recognition of the merits of her husbands.
Her controversial relationship with Hernán Cortés, the conqueror of Mexico, is also of interest, as is her second marriage to a man from Bohemia. For this paper, the study of archival materials, both Spanish and Czech, was used.
