The chapter briefly summarizes the thin and speculative information we have on the topic of rituals connected to winter solstice practiced by continental pre-Christian Germanic peoples. As we have almost no sources in this regard we have to turn either to Old Norse literary sources or to late folklore for comparative material.
The chapter does not attempt to produce any reconstruction, it just overviews what we have in Old Norse textual sources and selected motifs from later folklore and it leaves the reader to make their own extrapolations into the unknown past.
