Fauvel in Bohemia? Reflections on the diffusion of a literary and iconographic theme in the 14th century

Abstract

In an interdisciplinary perspective, the study considers the possibility of extending the substance of the Fauvel romance from the first quarter of the 14th century in Central Europe, or in the medieval Czech lands. Attention is focused on a fresco from the castle of Strakonice, depicting the wheel of Fortune with a falling hybrid figure that has horse hooves and a tail.

The connection with the iconographic and ideological content of the Fauvel is all the more probable because the lords of Strakonice belonged in the 14th century to the close circle of John of Luxembourg and Charles IV.
