The chapter summarizes the development of approaches to the integration of foreigners in Berlin across different historical epochs. Despite the historical evolution and division of the city, Berlin has represented and continues to represent a significant destination for migration towards Germany.
It is precisely individuals with a migration background who have gradually transformed and altered the face of the city. During the existence of divided Berlin, this primarily concerned its western part; after the reunification of Germany (and Berlin) in 1990, these phenomena began to manifest throughout the entire city.
