Abstract

The collective monograph presents P.J. Šafařík, a well-known pioneer of Slavic studies, Slavic philology and ethnography, in an unconventional light as a creator of ethnographic maps. After the introduction, the reader is introduced to the life and work of P.J. Šafařík as well as to the contemporary environment of Europe associated with the national liberation struggle for the equality of the Slavic peoples.

The work analyzes his historical, geographical and ethnographic manuscript maps, but also printed maps with notes and other unique aids from the estate of P.J. Safaříka preserved in the Map Collection of the Faculty of Arts, UK.

In the final synthesis, the author evaluates Šafařík's historical-geographical method and method of creating maps, as well as the contribution of the philologist and his collaborators. The result of the original research is also an overview of manuscript, printed, edited, planned and actually published maps of P.J. Šafařík.

The contribution of his cartographic work is evaluated. The monograph evaluates the integrity, preservation and making available of the fund in the Map Collection of the Faculty of Arts of the UK.

In 2023, the entire set was submitted by the Czech Republic for inclusion in the UNESCO MoW Register. The appendix consists of PJ Šafařík's Bibliography of maps, concepts and tools with annotations.
