Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to analyze Imrich Karvaš's views on the market and its changes in the context of the first third of the 20th century. In addition to the analysis of Karvaš's views on the issue, the aim is to draw attention to a different legal and national economic approach to economic competition and to cartels, which is dominant for the whole of continental Europe from the end of the 19th century until the 1950s.

Cartels and private monopolies, as well as the entire sector of state monopolies, were the legal structure of the national economy, and in the 1930s in Central Europe, they were even the preferred market structure of politicians. Karvaš's 1931 study General about the origin of cartels, the 1930 study Elements of Collectivistic Economy in an Individualistic Economic Order, the 1932 study Cartels and the Public Interest, and the 1932 work Influence of Cartels on the Economy are analyzed in more detail.
