External compression in venolymphatic insufficiency

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen |
2023

Abstract

Compression therapy is the most important basic treatment modality in venous leg ulcers and lymphoedema. It is defined as the pressure exerted on tissues placed under compression, including blood and lymphatic vessels.

External compression has been used for millenia, yet it is still relevant today and its effects in treatment are still not fully apreciated. The authors explain the pathophysiology of venolymphatic insufficiency and the effect of different types of compression with reference to functional consequences.
