Abstract
The paper focuses on Dalimil's Chronicle which was written in the early 14th century as the first chronicle in Czech. Composed in verses, this significant literary and historical work often employs metaphorical and formulaic language, including proverbs and sayings.
As it will be shown, some proverbs are still used in modern Czech, while others are no longer in use. Many of them are still understandable but the meaning of others remains enigmatic.
Translating or interpreting them can therefore be challenging. Special attention will be paid to a saying about Radoch and his boat, which can be found in only one other text from the mid-14th century.
