Abstract

Madeleine Albright was the first woman to head the US State Department under President Bill Clinton. She was born in Prague in 1937 and went into exile in the US with her family after the communist coup.

Her Central European background shaped her as a diplomat and politician, especially when she was able to play a key role in shaping further developments after the collaps of communism. Her friendship with Czech civil rights activist an later President Václav Havel played a major role in this context.
