Abstract

The chapter is devoted to the issues related to the activity of stonemasons and their activities in Prague towns in the medieval and early modern periods. They have always occupied a specific position among the building crafts, as they were on the borderline between craftsmanship and art. They were at the forefront of medieval representative buildings, especially sacral ones, which were inextricably linked to the activities of the building works, and prominent builders/architects were recruited from their ranks.

The work of medieval stonemasons was primarily linked to large ecclesiastical building enterprises (construction of cathedrals), but they were also involved in secular buildings. Many of them occupied a prominent position in the construction or reconstruction of aristocratic residences, and in towns, especially in the construction of town halls, houses of wealthy patricians, town fortifications, as well as stone bridges, etc.

In connection with the development of towns and the expansion of construction activities, guild organisations began to emerge from the second half of the 15th century onwards, alongside the building factories.

The text includes an overview of Prague stonemasons in the period in question, and information on stonemasons' marks is also included.
