Use of heuristic strategies for solving mathematical problems

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2023

Abstract

We cannot expect that pupils would use heuristic strategies spontaneously, if they are not supported by the teacher or somebody else. One of the possibilities that teachers have for their disposal, is the use of problems that can be solved using one or more heuristic strategies instead of algorithmic school procedures.

The lecture focused on the importance and role of situations that support pupils' mathematical creativity (finding own solving strategies in nonstandard situations) and on possibilities that teachers have for changing pupils' attitude to solving problems with algorithms.
