Town and Village in the Terminology of Medieval Sources in the Czech Lands

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The study deals with the changes in the designation of the basic types of medieval sites, on the one hand emerging and developing towns, on the other hand rural settlements. In contemporary texts written mostly in Latin, classical Latin terms are used for localities, but their content has changed over the centuries.

The author traces the designation of localities in the Czech lands in narrative and diplomatic sources of the 12th and 13th centuries. Specifically, the terms urbs, civitas, metropolis, castrum, castellum and oppidum, munitio, villa, curtis, vicus and suburbium.
