Human rights in Asia: The evolution of human rights protection in ASEAN

Publication at Faculty of Law |
2023

Abstract

At present, Asia remains one of the few regions in the world that has not developed its own human rights protection system to promote and protect human rights. A certain change in this area is represented by the efforts of the ASEAN subregional organisation to create a human rights protection system within this organisation.

The aim of this contribution is to outline the approach to human protection in ASEAN over the last 30 years or so and to examine the structure of the system, in particular its human rights bodies and documents adopted within its framework for the protection and promotion of human rights. Subsequently, the text examines how the protection provided by these tools is effective and what possible shortcomings it contains.
