Theoretical Reflection on Motor Learning

Abstract

Teachers and coaches use a variety of approaches and strategies when teaching movement skills. Two theoretical approaches are presented: the Generalized Motor Program (GMP) and Dynamic Systems Theory (DTS), which educators can use as a potential theoretical framework in fi nding original ways and strategies to teach and improve the skills of their charges.

The principles of nonlinear pedagogy presented here, based on a dynamic framework: develop more eff ective game-like qualities in students (opportunities to move in game contexts); facilitate studentsʼ exploration of individualized and creative movement solutions in learning motor skills (by reducing the emphasis on prescriptive instruction and drill); and promote interactions with peers through multiple problem-solving platforms and collaborative learning.
