Abstract
It is necessary to teach students to think critically not only about current events, but also about those far away. In history, we need to present students with different interpretations of the same event, e.g. the date of the destruction of Pompeii (traditionally 24 August 79), the painterly inspiration for Bulwer Lytton's novel (traditionally a painting by Karl Brjullov), and re-evaluate them.
