Education for Democracy (EfD) was a nonprofit organization based in Canada (1990-2000) and in the USA (1990-1995). It brought more than 1,500 volunteer English teachers to Czechoslovakia at a time when they were most sorely needed.
Its story illustrates the drive for mutual re-discovery of West and East after their forced separation during the Cold War. Despite lacking adequate financial and organizational resources, EfD managed to make a more profound impact in this area than some better-equipped organizations.
