The monography focuses on reciprocal relationship between a variety of endocrine disorders and diabetes mellitus. Although diabetes mellitus represents an endocrine disorder as well, in Czechia it used to be traditionally managed by unique specialization.
Not only due to the change in postgraduate education system but mainly because of enormous increase in incidence of diabetes mellitus and other endocrine diseases, a complex view on bilateral association between diabetes and other endocrine disorders is highly warranted. Many hormones influence insulin action and insulin has a significant impact on function of multiple hormonal systems.
Chapters and devoted to endocrine gland (pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, gonads, neuroendocrine system and bones). Each chapter is introduced by a pathophysiologic excursion, association between main types of diabetes mellitus and specific endocrine gland with an emphasis on clinical practice (e.g. the relevance of screening of diabetes in disorders of adrenal glands, specific gonadal disorders in diabetes etc).
The next part is focused on the therapeutic aspects in concurrent presence of diabetes and endocrine disease). The monography is intended for broad professional audience, particularly for postgraduate training (in endocrinology, internal medicine etc).
