Abstract

Paresis of the facial nerve in the acute and chronic phase leads to a whole range of functional and organic damage. These are pronunciation disorders, disorders in the oral phase of swallowing, vision disorders and problems with non-verbal communication.

Paresis of the facial nerve limits the affected person functionally, aesthetically and emotionally. Patients are often socially stigmatized, which leads to a significantly reduced quality of life.

The beginning of therapy is determined by the type and severity of the disease. It is an interdisciplinary treatment, focused mainly on facial symmetry and the ability to specifically control isolated movements.

It is necessary to support muscle functions through coordination exercises in order to prevent synkinesis. Targeted exercises guided by a therapist using biofeedback improve the function of facial muscles and reduce the risk of secondary damage.

Self-therapy is also an important component of rehabilitation, which in no way can replace therapeutic support, but can increase the frequency and availability of the necessary treatment.
