Currently, the proportion of older individuals in the population is generally increasing. In order for the lives of the aging population to be fulfilling and of high quality, it is necessary to preserve their long-term self-sufficiency and independence from the assistance of others.
This can be achieved by maintaining well-functioning motor skills and the associated ability for free movement. The aim of this chapter is to emphasize the importance of regular physical activity for seniors.
We focus on describing selected factors influencing the functional physical and mental condition of seniors. Special attention is given to so-called frail seniors and their specific considerations in the implementation of physical activities.
We include the preoperative and postoperative significance of physical activity and its prescription within the framework of rehabilitation care during hospitalization and after discharge from the hospital.
