Incarnation, Eucharist, Church : Body in the Light of Christ's Mystery according to Adrienne von Speyr

2022

Abstract

Adrienne von Speyr's mystical theology, influenced by her roles as a physician, wife, and mother, presents an interesting bridge between the spiritual and the material. The article describes three theological aspects of the human body detected in her writings: corpus natum, corpus sacramentale, and corpus mysticum, and focuses on their Christological roots as presented in the book Passion von Innen.

After describing the general notion of the bodily existence present in Adrienne's writings, the text deals with the central themes which illuminate the meaning of the human body in the light of the Christian faith: Incarnation, the Eucharist, and the mystery of the Church and sketches the way it can resonate in the practical life of a Christian.
