Abstract
Rembrandt Hamenszoon van Rijn is one of the most famous artists, not only in Holland, but all over the world. He grew up in Leiden, then moved to Amsterdam and married Saskia van Uylenburgh.
After her death, he lived first with his housekeeper and then with Hendrikje Stoffels. He excelled in his ability to capture both everyday events and religious themes of the Old and New Testaments and was a master of the portrait, including many self-portraits throughout his life.
