The book explores the different representations of Maya religion as they appear in the history of Maya studies. On the one hand it studies different types of theoretical and methodological approaches the discipline went through, showing the mutual relations between Maya studies and Religious studies mainly in the second half of the 20th century.
On the other hand the book explores the way how motifs from Western Esotericism and Alternative ("New Age") spirituality traveled into the discipline, transforming its key concepts related to Maya religion.
