The Labyrinth of the City-World in Miroslav Huptych's Digital Collages

Abstract

Miroslav Huptych (b. 1952) illustrated a number of calendars and books with his collages and photomontages. This text is dedicated to the 54 collages that accompany Comenius' The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart (1623), one of the crowning works of Baroque literature, whose publication marks exactly the 400-year anniversary this year.

Each of Huptych's large-format collages consists of countless scenes and has the character of original metaphors, allegories and symbols. The article gives examples of other important representatives of this genre and analyses Huptych's creative processes (fragmentation, gulliverization, hybridization, deformation of forms and shapes etc.).
