Moving forward to new educational realities in the digital era

Publication

Abstract

The article presents the results of the work of the international group TWG9 "Social and emotional aspects in new modes of learning with digital technologies" at EDUsummIT2023 in Kyoto. The starting point for the TWG9 meetings were the materials of UNESCO, WHO, OECD, and publications of some TWG9 members, including the analysis of published documents related to the keywords social, emotional, and learning. The authors draw attention to new educational realities, which brings life in two simultaneously existing environments - real and virtual, and which have an impact on the social and emotional well-being of the young generation, on their learning and growth. Children and adolescents need to learn a balanced set of cognitive, social and emotional skills in order to succeed in modern life.

In the discussion, TWG9 concluded that research suggests that social emotional learning (SEL) is a key to building emotional resiliency in individuals and that the brain networks that support SEL need to be nurtured and trained to cultivate human flourishing.
