Problems in Teaching First Aid from the Perspective of Czech Teachers

Abstract

Teaching first aid is an integral part of framework educational programs and is implemented in various subjects at primary and secondary schools. Educators encounter several different problems that limit the implementation of effective first-aid teaching.

Based on previous published studies, it appears that it may involve, for example, a lack of finances, insufficient teaching materials, time for instruction, and/or uncertainty among educators regarding which first aid topics and proce- dures should be taught as a priority or how to structure the instruction generally to make it as effective as possible. We, therefore, conducted a questionnaire, which serves as a pilot background study for planned more detailed research on the given issue.

The respondents (N=35) were teachers from primary and secondary schools. They rated a set of selected complications according to how big of a problem they thought they were.

The results showed that the biggest problem is the education of teachers in first aid (including didactic competencies), and the lack of funds and aid. Based on these results, we proposed possible solutions to the specified problems in school practice and presented a set of recommendations for the planned follow-up study.
