Text selection for Literary Education in Latin Classes

Abstract

If we want to strive for at least a partial involvement of literary education, i.e. formative creative interpretive work with a Latin text or translation, in the current conditions of Latin teaching in secondary schools, the question of choosing a suitable original or translation text is crucial. Firstly, in the case of historical and philosophical prose, and generally longer texts, the whole work is not selected, and secondly, the teacher must strive to ensure that the selection meets the pupils' preferences and expectations, at least to some extent.

The criterion of difficulty is also important; a text that is too difficult significantly reduces motivation. The paper therefore looks at these criteria and attempts to make some suggestions for suitable reading in both prose and poetry.
