Practitioner Reflections on Managing Political Parties in the Czech Republic

Abstract

In the following text, we describe the functioning of political parties from the point of view of their management. The first text focuses on this issue in the Czech political environment.

We also aim to apply and compare established practice with management theory in the business. We focus on four key political parties.

The Civic Democratic Party ODS, the TOP 09 party, and the Christian Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party KDU-ČSL formed a winning coalition (SPOLU) in the last parliamentary elections in 2021 (volby.cz, 2023). They are all current government members (Government of the Czech Republic, 2023).

They are established political parties with a sophisticated structure and a long history (Smolík, 2018). The fourth party is the ANO 2011 movement, representing a relatively exemplary business party often regarded as an example of a savvy goal-focused formation trying to succeed in elections (Kopeček, 2016).

We have also chosen the ANO movement because it is the youngest of all the parties studied and has a marketing procedure. For the chapter, we were able to conduct interviews with the general secretaries or top officials of the party management.
