Interview is a widely used method of qualitative data collection in educational research. The purpose of this study is to look into the qualitative interview design and find out how this data collection tool is used in current educational research.
To gain a reliable insight into the state of qualitative interview use in this type of research, dependable recent studies have been carefully selected and the method of qualitative content analysis, i.e. inductive and deductive analysis, have been applied onto their content. The results depict what type of qualitative interview was used in these selected qualitative research interview studies, how data were typically collected and handled, and last but not least, what data analysis procedures have been used by the researchers to analyse the data obtained through interviews.
The results of the content analysis have been presented in the analysis part and compared and contrasted in the discussion part with the qualitative interview design as it is described in the selected theoretical literature. The outline of interview design is given in the introduction part.
