Maurice Halbwachs on collective memory and legendary topography

Abstract

Halbwachs criticizes the concept of individual memory and instead sees memory as a social creation. He also applies it to historical memory, which he illustrates with rich material from the itineraries of pilgrims to the Holy Land (legendary topography).
