Theaim of the paper is toinvestigate fifth-grade pupils' strategies when solving a non-traditional word problemin the Czech Republic and Lithuania. Unlike typical word problems that can be solved by merely extracting numerical data and question words, the approach used in this study involves"What numbers make sense" word problems that demand a deeper understanding of the storyof the problem.
The purpose of this studyis to assess pupils'solution strategies,theirargumentation skills, and attention to linguistic limitations.
