Ultrasound in Urogynaecology - Lower Genitourinary Tract

Abstract

Routinely used ultrasound probes in obstetrics and gynaecology are convex abdominal and endovaginal probes. There is no other specific equipment available and necessary for use in urogynaecology.

The basic approach in urogynaecology is a transperineal ultrasound examination, with a convex abdominal probe placed in longer axis between labia majora; the upper part of the probe lies slightly inferior to the margin of symphysis pubis and the lower part of the transducer reaches the perineum. Transperineal ultrasound was firstly used in urogynaecology for assessment of the mobility of the bladder neck and urethra, which is a combination of rotation and descent.

Anterior compartment assessment includes description of bladder descent and the shape of retro-vesical angle. Urogynaecology is a leading subspeciality in using dynamic 3D ultrasound (4D ultrasound).

The diagnostic criteria used for ultrasound have high specificity (94%) with slightly lower sensitivity (63%).
