Abstract
In this chapter, the author deals with the specifics of functional communication in written Czech in people with hearing loss and demonstrates, on the basis of concrete examples, that some of them have difficulties in understanding written Czech texts even in adulthood and produce Czech texts that are difficult for their addressees to understand in varying degrees. It points to the reasons for this, which are due to the fact that these people with hearing loss do not have sufficiently developed knowledge and skills that are necessary for understanding and producing texts.
This is primarily a lack of competence in the primary means of communication (Czech or Czech sign language). Another reason for the low level of functional literacy in people with hearing loss is the application of inappropriate methods for teaching Czech and developing reading and writing skills in these individuals.
