Abstract

The study examines the historical novel Temno (1915) by Alois Jirásek with respect to four specific historical grievances against the Counter-Reformation period (1620-1740) that have impacted the Czech historical consciousness since the 19th century to the present day. These are the constitutional grievance , national, social and confessional.

All four grievances are present in the novel, which is interpreted by the study's author as resulting from the use by Jirásek of the great Czech historical narrative (a metanarrative) which had materialized during the 19th century to assist the needs of the nascent modern Czech nation. This narrative included the abovementioned concepts and grievances.
