Josef Jungmann: from language to identity

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2023

Abstract

The paper focuses on the position of Josef Jungmann in Czech national memory and public space and attempts to instrumentalize his memory. It recalls all the attempts to create a monument to Jungmann, most naturally focusing on the laying of the foundation stone for it on the current Jungmann Square (1873), the spectacular organisation of this celebration and its significance for Czech politics at the time, as well as the subsequent unveiling of the monument (1878).

Attention will also be paid to the efforts to maintain another important memorial to Josef Jungmann - his family cottage in Hudlice.
