Abstract

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) represents a common cause of upper and lower respiratory tract infections in all age groups. The severity of clinical manifestation mostly depends on the age of the infected patients - preterm and the youngest infants, people aged 65 years and older and patients of any age suffering from chronic conditions being most endagered by severe infestions.

RSV infections are typically seasonal but the regurality of their occurrence has been hugely modified by non-specific measures taken during the covid-19 pandemic. Epidemiological data and trials demostrate the RSV infections are associated with a non-negligible risk of hospitalization and death.

Globally, as many as 63 % of lower respiratory tract infections are being caused by RSV.
