Tick-borne encephalitis - clinical impact, options for therapy and prevention

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2023

Abstract

High incidence and frequency of complications makes tick-borne encephalitis the most epidemiologicaLLy and clinically significant arboviral infection not only in the Czech Republic, but also in most Central and Eastern European countries and some parts of Asia. Despite its relatively low mortality rate, up to one half of patients suffer long-term sequelae, thus making tick-borne encephalitis a major burden not only for the affected individuals, but for the healthcare and social system as well.

The only reliable means of protection is vaccination, in case of acute illness we are still limited to antiedematous and supportive treatment.
