The article reflects on the current artistic profile of the sculptor Jan Jiří Bendel. It examines how it has been constructed in the past, which questions have defined it and which methods have been preferred in its formulation.
It then confronts this profile of Jan Jiří Bendl with a newly discovered source of inspiration for the solution of one of his key sculptures, as well as with a previously unpublished medallion of the sculptor by Jan Jakub Quirin Jahn and, above all, with the surviving works. The confrontation made ultimately leads to a reinterpretation of Bendl's work, also applying the perspective of the "period eye".
