Intermezzo: A Preliminary Definition of Individuality in Science, Philosophy, and Art

Abstract

The study traces three important cultural figures of the Czech spiritual milieu: Emanuel Chalupný represents efforts to establish a basic framework for scientific debate (not as František Mareš did with regard to metaphysical foundations, but rather to cultivate polemics within the humanities); František Tučný represents both a critic of Masaryk's realism and one of the few thinkers to explicitly espouse the motives of Stirnerian individualism; Arthur Breisky represents the decadent aestheticism of individualism as rendered in the figures of the dandy and harlequin.
