Abstract

This paper traces the evolution of one of the orthographic principles for North-Central Romani in Czechia and Slovakia: the marking of code-switching in Romani with the use of the orthographic system of the source language. It traces various groups of texts published (or written) after the fall of communism till 1996, with regard to their different strategies of language contact management.

The paper contributes arguments for the thesis that Romani is more influenced by language contact than Czech or Slovak.
