The aim of the presentation is to consider the extent to which utilitarianism was influenced by Charles-Louis Montesquieu and Voltaire, two eminent personalities of the Enlightenment era. Presentation will focus on Voltaire's contribution to the theory of utility and also on Montesquieu's position on criminal law reform which aimed to prove the company need to use common sense. This is one of the aspects coveted even utilitarians.
Presentations will attempt to prove how philosopher and jurist had a significant influence on the utilitarian concept of freewill and the reform of criminal law at John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham particular. The purpose of the presentation is to introduce the topic which is generally neglected and is not given as much attention which that certainly belongs.
