Abstract

The Faculty of Arts of the Charles University invites doctoral students in Romance literature Klára Trsková and dr. Karolina Válové from the Institute of Romance Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the UK as part of the Pride Month lecture series.

The lecture will bring a brief excursion into the history of the position of LGBTQ+ persons in Portugal from the end of the 19th century to the present day. It will mainly focus on the portrait of the first Portuguese journalist and one of the first graduates of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Universidade de Lisboa, Virgínia Quaresma. What was the position of this queer feminist with African roots, born in 1882 in Portugal's rural Alentejo region, during the duration of the ultra-right New State? Was the situation in Brazil, where she lived and created together with her friend for five years, more favorable?
