Abstract

A polycrystalline Ni53.6Mn27.1Ga19.3 shape memory alloy was deformed in compression in four steps up to final deformation of 3.8 % at room temperature. After each deformation step relative elongation was measured in two thermal cycles in the temperature range of 300 K to 640 K, where thermoelastic martensitic phase transformation occurs.

The one-way shape memory effect, the two-way shape memory effect and dislocation recovery were observed after deformation of the alloy and their relation to other mechanical characteristics of the alloy was discussed. 60 % of total strain was recovered after two thermal cycles after the last deformation step.
