Shallow earthquakes : shallower than expected?

Abstract

An Mw 3.4 earthquake of western Corinth Gulf, Greece, was analysed as an example of a relatively rare event for which the moment-tensor (MT) calculation and the arrival-time location yield inconsistent results i.e. a very shallow MT-prefered depth. A synthetic experiment was also made to understand better this problem.

One of the reason for this discrepancy might be the use of an unapropriate crustal model
